How do I travel by air with the Foil Assist?Updated a month ago

We designed the Foil Assist batteries so you can take them on flights without any hassle, allowing you to use your Foil Assist at spots all around the globe.

Important information about LiPo batteries

When traveling with our LiPo batteries, it’s essential to follow the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. All information in this article is accurate as of January 1, 2025, and complies with the rules set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Please note: Every airline may have additional restrictions or requirements. Be sure to contact your airline before traveling. It is your responsibility to know and follow the rules of your airline. This article is only a guideline, always double-check the airline’s specific regulations yourself.

Information you need to provide to the airline before your trip

Contact your airline well in advance to obtain approval and clarify their exact requirements. Most airlines allow a maximum of two LiPo batteries under 160 Wh, which must be transported in your carry-on luggage.

⚠️ Important: Dangerous goods regulations are taken very seriously. Batteries that are not properly declared may be confiscated at the airport.

When requesting approval, your airline may ask for detailed information about the batteries, such as the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the UN38.3 Test Summary. You can download them here:

Checklist for flying with your batteries

  1. Contact your airline early to confirm you are allowed to travel with the two Foil Assist LiPo batteries. Tell them you are carrying 2 batteries with 159.6 Wh each. They will most likely ask for an official document such as the MSDS.
  2. If the airline grants approval, print it out or keep it easily accessible on your phone as airport staff may ask to see it.
  3. Inspect the batteries for any visible damage before packing. Security officers will refuse damaged batteries.
  4. Discharge both batteries to 30% (one LED light).
  5. Make sure the label showing “159.6 Wh” is clearly readable. This is the number security officers look for.
  6. Cover the battery terminals with electrical tape to prevent short circuits.
  7. Pack each battery separately in a LiPo bag. These are easy to find online.
  8. Be prepared to declare the batteries at check-in and show them during security screening. Allow extra time for this.
  9. We recommend packing the rest of your Foil Assist setup and any other equipment in your checked luggage, as foils, propellers, tools, and cables may cause issues at security checkpoints and could be refused carriage.
