What is the appropriate paddle for Downwind Foiling?Updated 2 months ago

Downwind Foiling can generally be done with nearly any SUP paddle; however, lighter materials such as carbon are recommended, as they better and more directly convert the paddling effort into forward momentum, and a lighter paddle is also more comfortable to hold once you're on the foil. Specialized downwind SUP paddles like the Duotone x Black Project FoilX offer additional advantages while paddling into the waves and are specifically designed with a particular blade shape tailored for Downwind Foiling. Generally, easily adjustable paddles are a good start, allowing the foiler to set the paddle to their desired length. Experienced downwind foilers increasingly use one-piece paddles that are precisely cut to the desired length (usually around the height of the foiler). Three-piece paddles are generally not recommended for Downwind Foiling, as they are more susceptible to breakage under heavy use, which can lead to dangerous situations on open water during Downwind Foiling.
